Ten Women

We believed in the power of songs, and that was how we set out on our path. Through songs, we recounted the sorrow, the joy, the love, the separation, and the migration stories of women. We spoke of the occurrences of rape and harassment that are steadily legitimised within male-dominated systems, and of the women who fall victim to them. Do not speak of ancient history; with welling eyes, we spoke of those who introduce gender discrimination into the world beginning with their own children today. We poured into a two-stanza song all the bruises and wounds a woman receives when she wishes to separate, every blow struck against her back. We spoke of the way women, whose dreams are shattered and hopes destroyed, secretly take refuge in their mothers within their souls. We recounted how a woman, shouldering a mountain of responsibilities within a single week—work, home, children, a spouse, family—talks to her flowers, showing that life is hard, but when you are a woman, it grows harder still. We emphasised that the state of passion is not exclusive to men, that a woman too can become Leyla and fall into the desert, our hearts breaking once more. With bleeding hearts and a fierce reprimand to society, we articulated what it truly means to be made a child bride (pedophilia) through custom. We cried out through the pen of a woman whose verses, carrying deep sorrow within, transformed into songs. We called out with a song that will be etched like a tattoo upon our hearts, asserting that every woman is somewhat solitary, and holds the absolute freedom to live out her solitude. This is precisely how "Ten Women" laboured to be born. May it serve as a voice, as a beacon of hope, and as a source of resilience for women who scream their outcry within themselves. May it be a gift to the 8th of March, International Working Women's Day. Long live the 8th of March! Long live the women's struggle!
