Fireweed

In this piece, I want to talk to you about a foundation. The foundation is called Fireweed. It was established to support women and children who have faced inequality, poverty, violence, and discrimination. Although it was founded in the United Kingdom, its reach extends across the globe, bringing relief to people's hardships. The plant it is named after, "Fireweed", is the only living species that rises from its own ashes after a forest fire. Do not be fooled by Fireweed being a single word; its meaning is immense.

In 1911, in a New York textile factory, all the workers went on strike demanding better working conditions. In the fire that broke out, 146 people, mostly women and children, lost their lives. Out of this immense tragedy, the 8th of March was born. Fireweed proudly states that it was established to keep their memory alive.

One of the founders of Fireweed, Sevim Dicle Sertkaya, is originally from Bingöl. No matter how many years she has spent living in Europe, she has never forgotten the poverty and the parched lands of Bingöl. A few years ago, Sertkaya, along with her older sister Zühriye Sertkaya Bütün, began planting lavender as an experiment on their three-acre plot of land in the Karer region of Bingöl. The lavender found life and multiplied in the barren soil of Bingöl. So much so that, growing across this three-dekar area, it has become a beacon of hope for the entire local community in terms of employment and honest labour. Furthermore, they support the impoverished women living in the region to establish their own lavender fields. Nowadays, those parched, unyielding lands are thriving with the beautiful scents of lavender.
